Pakistan Aims to Bolster Relations with U.S. During Congressional Delegation’s Visit

ISLAMABAD: In a bid to reinforce its diplomatic and economic ties with the United States, Pakistan has expressed its desire to deepen cooperation with Washington across multiple sectors. This initiative coincides with a high-level visit by a U.S. Congressional delegation, which comes amid ongoing tensions linked to newly imposed tariffs.

The American delegation was headed by Representative Jack Bergman and also included Representatives Thomas Richard Suozzi and Jonathan L. Jackson. Accompanied by senior U.S. officials, the group held meetings with key Pakistani leadership to discuss avenues for mutual collaboration and explore future partnerships.

The highlight of their visit was a meeting with Pakistan’s Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal. Discussions centered on enhancing Pakistan-U.S. bilateral engagement, especially in development-focused areas. Both sides expressed interest in fostering greater connectivity and understanding to promote shared goals.

According to an official statement, the dialogue aimed to lay the groundwork for long-term cooperation. Minister Iqbal emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to a broad-based partnership with the United States, underscoring areas such as education, technology, climate resilience, trade, and investment as priority sectors for collaboration.

Iqbal noted that the U.S. has historically played an important role in Pakistan’s development journey and that the country is keen to revive and elevate this partnership to better address contemporary global challenges. He highlighted Pakistan’s strategic importance as a bridge between Central Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East and stressed the need for economic integration to achieve regional stability.

The U.S. delegation, for its part, appreciated Pakistan’s efforts toward regional peace and development. They expressed interest in expanding people-to-people ties and enhancing educational exchanges and technological cooperation. The delegation reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with Islamabad and exploring opportunities for productive engagement.

The visit also takes on additional significance in light of recent trade tensions, including discussions around new tariff policies. While these developments have sparked debate, both countries appear to be seeking ways to avoid escalation and instead focus on areas of mutual interest.

In addition to official meetings, the Congressional delegation is expected to meet with representatives from civil society, business leaders, and academia during their stay. These interactions are intended to offer a broader perspective on Pakistan’s economic potential and its aspirations to foster inclusive growth and development.

This visit marks an important chapter in Pakistan-U.S. relations, as both sides appear to be recalibrating their diplomatic and economic strategies in a rapidly changing global environment. As dialogue continues, officials hope to turn this engagement into concrete actions that benefit both nations.

By reaching out through such high-level visits and open discussions, Pakistan hopes to rebuild trust and create a forward-looking agenda that deepens bilateral cooperation for the future.
