President Murmu Pays Tribute: India Will Always Honor the Martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh

New Delhi: On Sunday, President Droupadi Murmu solemnly honored the memory of those who lost their lives in one of the darkest chapters of India’s colonial past—the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. Remembering the innocent souls who fell victim to brutal oppression, President Murmu stated that a thankful nation will forever hold them in reverence.

The massacre, which took place on April 13, 1919, in Amritsar, Punjab, marked a turning point in India’s struggle for independence. British troops, under the command of General Dyer, opened fire on a large gathering of unarmed Indian civilians. These men, women, and children had assembled to peacefully protest the draconian Rowlatt Act—a law that gave sweeping powers to the British government to arrest and detain without trial.

With exits blocked and no warning issued, the indiscriminate firing continued for about ten minutes, killing hundreds and injuring many more. The cruelty of the event sent shockwaves throughout the country and deeply impacted the national conscience, intensifying the demand for self-rule.

In her message of remembrance, President Murmu remarked, “I bow to the brave freedom fighters who attained martyrdom at Jallianwala Bagh. Their courage in the face of tyranny and their ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten. Their legacy is etched in the heart of every Indian, and their valor continues to inspire us.”

President Murmu emphasized that the sacrifice of these individuals laid a strong foundation for the freedom movement. “Their blood nourished the roots of our struggle for independence. It is because of their unwavering spirit and determination that India eventually broke free from colonial rule,” she said.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre is not only a grim reminder of the atrocities of British colonialism but also a symbol of India’s collective resilience. The memory of that tragic day still evokes a deep sense of sorrow, but also pride in the unity and courage of the Indian people.

The President’s tribute comes as citizens across the country remember the event with solemnity and gratitude. Ceremonies and memorials held at Jallianwala Bagh today saw people from all walks of life paying their respects. Flowers were laid, candles were lit, and silence was observed in honor of the lives lost.

President Murmu concluded by calling on all Indians to uphold the ideals for which those martyrs stood. “As we remember their sacrifice, let us also renew our commitment to justice, freedom, and unity. Let us work to build an India that they would have been proud of.”

The events of April 13, 1919, remain an enduring symbol of sacrifice and a reminder of the cost of freedom. As India continues to progress, the stories of such courage ensure that the flame of patriotism burns bright in every generation.
