Delhi building collapse: In the early hours of Saturday a four-storey building collapsed in the Mustafabad area of Delhi, claiming at least four lives and leaving several others trapped under the debris. The horrifying moment was caught on camera, with a video circulating on social media showing a massive cloud of dust as the structure crumbled to the ground.
Building collapses around 3 AM
The incident occurred around 3 am in the densely populated Mustafabad locality. According to officials, the building came down suddenly while residents were asleep, leaving little time for evacuation. Police confirmed that fourteen people have been rescued so far, though four of them succumbed to their injuries. Authorities estimate that eight to ten people might still be trapped under the rubble.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Police, and Delhi Fire Services immediately reached the site to initiate a search and rescue operation. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East District) Sandeep Lamba confirmed the scale of the disaster. “Fourteen people were rescued, but four among them succumbed. It was a four-storey building. The rescue operation is underway, and around eight to ten people are still feared trapped,” he told ANI.
Divisional Fire Officer Rajendra Atwal also provided an update, stating that a distress call was received around 2:50 am. “When we reached the spot, we saw the entire building had collapsed, and people were trapped beneath the debris. NDRF, fire services, and police teams are working together to rescue them,” he said.
Eyewitness accounts
Heart-wrenching scenes unfolded as relatives and neighbors gathered at the site, desperately hoping for updates about their loved ones. A witness described the family that lived in the house, mentioning two men, their wives, and several children.
Shehzad Ahmed, a relative of the victims, shared his grief: “The building collapsed around 2.30-3 am. Two of my nephews have died. My sister, brother-in-law, and niece are injured and are being treated at GTB Hospital.”
This collapse comes just days after a wall of an under-construction building collapsed during a dust storm in Madhu Vihar, Delhi, on April 11, resulting in one death and two injuries. The back-to-back incidents have raised concerns over construction safety and the condition of buildings in several areas of the capital.
Meanwhile, rescue operations in Mustafabad remain underway as authorities continue efforts to locate and save those still trapped.
